How to age gracefully and healthily?
What is the life expectancy for Singaporean? It’s 85 years old for women and 80 years old for men according to World Health Organisation (WHO). In fact, Singapore is catching up with other developed countries in life expectancy where it has the 4th-best rate in the world, latest WHO figures reveal. Average life expectancy at birth stood at 82 yrs in 2011, making it a joint fourth with Italy.
We are already living, on average, longer than our parents & grandparents. However, longevity is not the only aim, we want to live both longer & in better health than our forebears, so that we can remain active, independent & productive members of society. In another words, what we want is having quality life - to enjoy wealth & time with good physical & mental health.
Health is real wealth. A healthy person is an asset to himself, to his family and to his community. On the other hand an ailing person is a burden on all. If health is lost, everything is lost. Therefore good health is one of the basic foundations on which our lives are built. In other words, we will have a better control over our life. However, we can’t use money to buy good health but we can earn it through adopting a healthy lifestyle.
So, what are the signs of aging? “Health” refers to physical, mental and social well being in WHO definition. According to experts, signs of aging are broadly divided into 2 categories – physical & mental.
Physical
- Loss of strength, muscle mass & increasing obesity
- Bones weaken & more susceptible to fracture – osteoporosis & osteoarthritis
- Skin thin, drier, wrinkled, less elastic & more fragile, bruise more easily
- Loss of bladder control (urinary incontinence)
- Forgetful
- Difficult to concentrate
- Anxiety, loss of confidence & depression
A sign of aging is not based on physical age but by biological age! It affects our health!!!

Look at this interesting findings here. Singapore is having the highest rate of coronary heart disease as compared to the countries who are also having similar life expectancy. So again longevity doesn’t mean quality lifestyle.

So this is the 'right' way to eat a cactus if you happen to get one from the market here. As I know most commonly people here will boil soup which in fact cactus has very high phytochemical & antioxidant which will also be boiled away after being heated up. So remember, cactus is afraid of heat, it has to be taken like a salad fast enough after removing the pricks and skin! Next it's about the species selection. Like eg for cactus, it has 400 over types of species all over the world, but only half of it can be eaten. Some are even poisonous. And one of the species that can be taken is Opuntia.
