What You Do Not Know About Omega-3?

Omega-3 fatty acids
  • an essential part of cell membranes
  • promote heart health by reducing triglycerides (fats in the blood), blood pressure and atherosclerosis.
  • regulate immunity by reducing inflammation and allergic reactions.
  • significantly aid the brain in learning and cognition
  • play an important role in babies’ growth.

There are various sources of omega-3 fatty acids, but not all are good for you.
Please read on and make an informed choice!

Due to water pollution, some species of fishes and other marine life are contaminated by high levels of mercury, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other pollutants, thus making it unsafe to obtain omega-3 from fish or seals.

Oil from fish liver, in particular cod liver oil, has excess vitamin A and D content, it may contain more poisonous substances as the liver is a filtering and detoxifying organ. Fish oil can also reduce vitamin E levels, either by preventing the absorption from one’s diet or exhaust vitamin E in the body.

Fish oil may
  • increase total blood cholesterol and prevent blood clotting, through interaction with medications, such as blood thinners, aspirin and high blood pressure drugs.
  • Overdose can lead to increased risk of stroke and cancer
  • Large amounts can also increase LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Not all plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids are safe. For example, flax seed has a good omega-6: omega-3 ratio, however, experimental studies have raised concerns that it may be unsafe for unborn children when taken by expectant mothers. Flax seed may also worsen hormone-sensitive conditions, such as breast, uterine and ovarian cancers. Soft gels of oil including flax seed oil usually contain glycerine as an additive. Glycerin may be derived from animal fats, vegetable fats or petroleum and may contain more calories.

Making the right choice!!!
The 3 major types of omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic (ALA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

ALA is the foundation of omega-3 fatty acids. It is an essential fatty acid. This means our body cannot make ALA; it must be obtained from food. Most people do not get adequate amounts of ALA. The human body can converts ALA to DHA and EPA.

ALA is found in Plant sources including seeds (chia seeds and kiwi fruit seeds), vegetables oils (canola, soybean and walnut) and green vegetables (Brussels sprouts, kale and spinach).

Chia seed is cholesterol free
  • Experimental study showed that chia diets can dramatically decrease triacylglycerol levels
  • Increase HDL (good) cholesterol.
  • Regular consumption can reduce blood pressure and inflammation, lowering cardiovascular disease risk.
  • Abundant in antioxidants that help fight free radicals and nourish the immune system.
  • Experimental studies show that oil from chia seeds inhibits cancer growth and spread by increasing T cell infiltration and suppressing cancer cell reproduction.
  • Good sources of fibre that help maintain a healthy digestive tract and prevent gastrointestinal diseases such as diverticulitis and colon cancer.
  • Can absorb more than 12 times its weight in water, helping the body to conserve water.
  • Help to calm nerves and strengthen memory.

Kiwi fruit seed is a rich source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)
  • Kiwi fruit seed oil contains about 62% ALA, much higher than other sources of ALA, such as flax seeds.
  • The essential fatty acids in kiwi fruit seeds are necessary for making prostaglandins, which play a role in immune function by regulating inflammation and encouraging the body to fight infection.
  • Kiwi fruit seeds display antibacterial activity.

ALA is needed for proper growth in children, particularly for neural development and maturation of sensory systems.

One of the key benefits of Omega 3 is anti-inflammatory effect that may benefit rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.
